THIS IS A CHANCE TO SEE A VALLEY IN THE SOUTH OF CHILE THAT HAS BEEN WITH NO ROADS FOR A LONG TIME, NOW WE CAN DRIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ANDES TO DISCOVER ALL ITS MAGIC PLACES AND STAY AT A UNIQUE LODGE AT THE LAKE TOTORAL AND ENJOY THE LOCAL FOOD WITH DIFFERENT OUTDOOR ALTERNATIVES
Course of the tour
Day 01
| From Puerto Montt to Llanada Grande
We drive through downtown Puerto Montt, gateway to Chilean Patagonia, to Mile 0 of the Carretera Austral, Chiles equivalent of the Alaska Highway. The route takes us south along the Reloncaví Sound passing picturesque fishing villages to La Arena Cove. Here a ferry carries us across the Fjord of Reloncaví into northern Patagonia proper. Approaching the Andes, we enter the steep-walled valley of the Puelo River that originates in Argentina.Heading upstream, we reach Lake Tagua Tagua, which we cross in yet another ferry. From here we follow a new road built to allow access to pioneer settlements in this isolate region. We visit the Llanada Grande Falls that cascade from an impressive height down a vertical rockface. We also take time to paddle a canoe on Lake Totoral. A comfortable cabin awaits us, along with a hearty Patagonian meal.
Day 02
| Lago Azul hike
A full day of hiking or horseback riding to Lake Azul, a cobalt blue lake surrounded by high mountains, enjoying a picnic lunch along the way. We return to our cabin in the late afternoon, where a traditional Patagonian style barbecue awaits us.
Day 03
| Cochamó Valley
We return through the beautiful Puelo River Valley to the Fjord of Reloncaví, then head north to Cochamó, a town frequented by Butch Cassidy during the period he tried to go straight as a cattle rancher in Argentina. This town was a stopover on the route he and Sundance followed to sell their cattle in Puerto Montt. We stop here for lunch at Campo Aventura. After lunch we continue north to Petrohue where we ascend the Osorno Volcano for a breath-taking panorama of the Chilean Lake District. At the foot of the volcano lies the historic Hotel Ensenada that once hosted Teddy Roosevelt back in 1913 on his trip across Northern Patagonia. Dinner and nights rest in this historic inn provide a fitting completion to an unforgettable experience.
Day 04
| Lake Crossing or Puerto Montt
Transfer from there to the Puerto Montt airport where you can begin your return trip to Santiago, or fly south to Punta Arenas on the Straits of Magellan.
Another option available from here is to follow Teddy Roosevelts route across the Andes by lake using a combination of modern vessels to the Swiss-style city of Bariloche in the Argentine Patagonia.
